Translating

My interest in translation is as both a practitioner and researcher. As a practitioner, I translate from Finnish to English, and specialise in literature, literary non-fiction, culture writing, and drama. I frequently translate samples of novels from a wide range of genres, from historical fiction, to autofiction, to romantasy. I also have experience of translating poetry, which I am keen to explore further.

I have a particular specialism in drama translation, which is the focus of my academic research. For my PhD, I produced two alternate translations of late nineteenth-century feminist playwright Minna Canth’s The Worker’s Wife. I have continued my work on Canth, and am currently finalising my edited collection of translations of her plays, Four Plays by Minna Canth: Experiments in Feminist Realism.

My translations have appeared in Asymptote and been longlisted for the John Dryden translation competition. I was part of the 2022 Finnish translation mentorship programme hosted by the Finnish Literature Exchange (FILI).

Reading

I am a beady-eyed reader with extensive knowledge of Finnish literature and the Finnish literary market, keeping up to date with the latest trends and titles. I am an experienced writer of readers reports for scouts, agents and publishers.

In 2024 and 2025, I was a judge for the Oxford-Weidenfeld Prize for literature in translation, acting as Chair of the judging panel in 2025.

Teaching & Talking

I love any excuse to talk about translation. I have chaired and spoken on panel discussions on the craft of literary translation, working as an emerging translator, and researching translation for Oxford Translation Day. I frequently present my research on theatre translation in academic contexts. I have also devised and delivered workshops on feminist theatre translation.
